Country

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world spread along the equator. It is also the largest island country in the world, has more than 17000 islands located on both sides of the equator, out of which 6000 are inhabited by humans. It is the Southeast country spanning between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Officially called the 'Republic of Indonesia,' it is a sovereign state with abundant natural resources like coal, oil and natural gas, gold, copper, nickel, etc.

Weather

The climate here falls under the tropical category. Every large island has a tropical rainforest climate, with precipitation falling round the year. As you set your foot on the land, you will feel warm air tickling your face. However, high altitude regions are naturally cooler. Two seasons are prevalent over here- the dry season and wet season; however, neither tends to go towards the extremity. The dry season prevails from May to October, while the remaining months observe the wet season. The temperature here remains almost constant, with very meager variations between the seasons. The warm water forming 81% of the country’s region ensures this. The average temperature of the country is in-between 23-28° C.

People & Language

The official and national language of Indonesia is Indonesian, a standardized form of Malay. The country harbors more than 700 regional languages, about 10% of the total languages spoken in the world! It makes it rank second in the world in terms of linguistic diversity. The country recognizes a single official language; all other languages are deemed as regional languages. Javanese is the most popular regional language here. The native people here began trading with other countries such as China, Arab, Indian, Eurasian, Dutch, Japan, etc. from ancient times dating back to 7th century A.D. This incorporated their local languages in the country to an extent such that they are even included in their academic curriculum. These languages include Arabic, German, French, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean.

Practicalities

Time: There are three time zones active in the country. 

West Indonesia time zone (Jakarta) is 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. (GMT +07:00)

Central Indonesia time zone (Bali) is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. (GMT +08:00)

East Indonesia time zone (Maluku) is 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. (GMT +09:00)

Electricity: Electricity in Indonesia is supplied at 230V and 50 Hz. Two types of plug systems are in use here: Type C with two round pins and Type F with two round clips and two earth clips on the side. If you are from the US, Canada, or South American countries, you will need a voltage converter, as the standard voltage of your appliances would be fit for the voltage range 100-127 V.

Weight & Measurement: Metric system of weights and measurements has been made mandatory in Indonesia since 1938.

Telecommunications: For P.C.s connected with the internet, warnet is used. Suppose you are using a GSM/CDMA cellular phone. In that case, you can quickly get data connectivity at very affordable rates using a prepaid SIM, which is also available at a much low cost. Telephone and mobile phones both are available here at cheaper rates. Internet facilities can be accessed in almost all of the country.

Currency

The official currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah, with the currency code issued by ISO 4217 as IDR. (If you are thinking the name rupiah is derived from our own Sanskrit language meaning silver, then you are right; the local people also refer to rupiah as Perak. The currency is available in the forms of coins and banknotes. The coins made up of aluminum, bronze ad nickel are available in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000. Banknotes are available in denominations 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000 Rp. Banknotes below 1000 Rp are not circulated now owing to its low value. ATMs are available in all the major cities and tourist locations—however, some of the machines very low withdrawal up to 500000/day. Visa and MasterCard are also prevalent, but beware of frauds while using credit cards. American Express is not widely used here.

Culture & Lifestyle

Strong influences from India, Mainland China, Europe, and Austronesia can be found in the culture of Indonesia. This has led Indonesia to become multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-ethnic at the present day. 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in Indonesia. Art and architecture have been a part of Indonesian culture since ancient times. In the arts, too, influences from foreign countries like India, Arab, China, and Europe can be detected. For sculpture, wood and stone are most commonly used. The temples of Borobudur and Prambanan displays such art.

Dance has shown wide development here. More than 3000 original dance forms are part of Indonesian culture. The national costume of Indonesia is Batik and Kebaya. Other regional costumes include ulos, songket, ikat, etc. This national and regional attire is adorned in traditional weddings, music performances, etc. It is a traditional country, and except for beaches in Bali, women here dress in a modest way covering their legs and necklines.

Most sports played here are male-centric. Badminton and football are the most played games here. Boxing and basketball are also among the popular sports of this country. Though religious freedom is granted, the government officially recognized only six religions viz. Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Indonesia has the largest number of Muslims residing in the country with above 85 %. Islam was brought here by Sunni and Sufi traders from India and the Southern Arabian Peninsula since the 8th century.

Overlanding in Indonesia

Want to rent a car and roam around by yourself? The cars for rent are available at, much cheaper rate here. Fuel cost is also low. For driving on your own, an international driver permit is required. So, you may as well want to prefer a local driver who is available at cheap rates. However, road conditions are not maintained well. Not following Traffic signals, driving on the shoulders of the road is a common practice here. The driving habits of the netizens are worse as compared to those from India or Vietnam. Cars may lack the provision of the seat belt.

However, the government is paying attention to the safety protocols in recent years and has been enforcing various traffic regulations too. If you are planning on a road trip, you can visit Bandung, especially during the weekend, as the local people also prefer to relax here on the weekends, thus making it populated during this time. It is a cool place located in a mountainous area. The natural scenery here can capture your hearts, and women can go on a shopping spree, as there are many shopping spots along the way.

Urban Adventure in Indonesia

Bali, Jakarta

Popularly known as the Island of Gods, Bali is considered a paradise on the earth. This is not said without any truth. At Bali, you can surely experience inner joy. Right from the friendly, welcoming people to its beautiful beaches- Bali is one of the most visited tourist hubs in the world. Around 80 % of the tourists coming to Indonesia just visit Bali alone! If you plan a trip to Indonesia, there is no need to pen down Bali in the list of places to visit, as Visiting Bali is self-understood without mentioning it. Most of the visitors arrive here in the month of August-September and the festive seasons of Christmas and New Year. Borobudur Temple, Central Java

Borobudur is a Buddhist stupa, the single largest Buddhist monument in the world. It is declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Borobudur lies in an active volcanic plain - Kedu plain. On the walls of Borobudur, life teachings of Lord Buddha are inscribed. There are two museums located around this place – Samudraraksha and Karmawibhanga. For witnessing the fascinating beauty of this holy place, reach before sunrise, and the scenery is one you won't be able to forget!

Tamansari Water Castle, Java

A Sultan of Yogyakarta built this castle. This castle's features include a resting area, a meditation area,  a workshop, a defense area, and a hiding place. When this magnificent castle was built, it had large artificial lake islands and a bathing complex. The central bathing complex is well preserved as of today. It was declared as World Heritage Site in 2017. Underground tunnels built as a defense feature for this palace are now open to the public.  

Lake Toba, Sumatra

Lake Toba, formed after a volcanic eruption, is the largest lake in entire Southeast Asia. The volcanic eruption was also the largest in several million years. The lake is calm as of now. You can even stay here for a couple of days to reminisce in peace. You can even witness an island within an island – Simosir Island is such an island, even accommodating a museum. You can even visit hot springs present across the causeway whose water is actually hot. You can go inside the pool and stay inside for about 20 minutes; the fragrance won't leave you for the next three days! Be careful if you go swimming in this lake. It is the deepest volcanic Crater Lake with a depth of 450 meters. 

Mount Merapi, Central Java

It is a volcanic eruption over Yogyakarta and Solo. This perfectly cone-shaped mountain is located 3000 meters above the mean sea level. Climbing this dangerous peak of Mount Merapi is restricted and banned by the officials. All the alternatives to climbing this mountain surrounding bushes and forests are officially closed, and if you still proceed further after buying the 'tickets,' you are still at your own risk. However, if you are a fan of camping, you can have real camping experience here. You need to bring all the equipment you feel required for camping and keep yourself aware of the prevailing safety regulations.

Lombok,  Nusa Tenggara

Lombok is situated in West Nusa Tenggara and is a part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. West Lombok has famous beaches, developed infrastructure for tourism purposes. The famous Gilli islands can be accessed from West Lombok. Gilli islands offer a great diving experience. North Lombok presents scenic beauty with beautiful waterfalls. Central and eastern Lombok has beaches. If you want to visit Sumbawa, then you can take a ferry ride from here. South Lombok is famous for surfing. Elephant Conservation Park is also situated in Lombok, which you cannot miss visiting. Housing 7 elephants, this park also lets you offer community services. For that, you can bathe and feed the elephants while on a day trip with this largest land animal!
